Yes and no.
I would never normally go slightly off topic, but in the circumstances that we are in, I feel it's right to clear up a few things regarding the latest epidemic and cycling.
First off, if you didn't know, the government allows exercise once a day. This means us cyclist can go out once on our bikes ideally in our local area. There is very little chance that you would come into contact with the virus during a cycle as there are not many contact points. This means there are few times that you could ever touch a surface that someone inhabiting the virus did during a cycle as you are mostly on your own bike and sitting on your saddle throughout. To further minimise the risk of contracting it, be careful not to be too close with other cyclists or pedestrians as well as making sure to avoid touching any public surface such as pedestrian buttons on crossings. Studies on similar cases have concluded that diseases can be transmitted through the air, but in very small concentrations that isn't enough to affect people. However, do bare in mind that there is currently no evidence to show that the coronavirus is an airborne disease.
The conclusion here is that cycling during these times is relatively safe, with a few precautions. This is aided with the fact that there isn't much contact points for cyclists during a cycle. Be sure to take extra measures to stay safe and always follow government guidance especially if you aren't cycling just for leisure.
Hope this short blog cleared up a few things and reassured you that you can continue being the amazing cyclist you are.
See you at the next one!
